Le philosophe ou l’inspiration du poète (1888). Henri-Jean-Guillaume Martin (French, 1860-1943). Oil on canvas.
This painting, prior to two important public commissions, is very impregnated with symbolism. The poet receives inspiration from the sudden appearance of a graceful, sensual figure. It is thus placed between the illuminated personifications of the Arts made a few years later for the Paris Town Hall (Painting, Sculpture, Literature and Music).
